The Bodies at a Glance

  1. General Council of the Bar (GCB);
  2. Body of Benchers (BoB);
  3. Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC);
  4. Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC);
  5. Legal Practitioners Remuneration Committee (LPRC);
  6. Council of Legal Education (CLE);
  7. National Judicial Council (NJC);
  8. Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

- PART II: General Council of the Bar (GCB) -

Establishment - S1 LPA

Composition

  • Attorney-General of the Federation (Chairman);
  • Attorneys-General of the States;
  • 20 members of the NBA - not less than 7 of whom shall be legal practitioners of not less than 10 years post-call.

Functions

  1. Empowered to make and revise the RPC - S12(4) LPA;
  2. Power to make rules of accounts to be kept by legal practitioners - S20(1) LPA.

- PART III: Body of Benchers (BoB) -

Establishment - S3 LPA

BoB comprises legal practitioners of the highest distinction in the legal profession in Nigeria (Bar & Bench).

NB: NOT every Judge is a Bencher.

Composition

  • Chief Justice of Nigeria + all Justices of the Supreme Court;
  • President of the Court of Appeal;
  • Attorney-General of the Federation & Minister for Justice;
  • Presiding Justices of the Court of Appeal Divisions;
  • Chief Judge of the Federal High Court;
  • President of the National Industrial Court;
  • Chief Judge of the High Court FCT;
  • Chief Judges of all the States;
  • Attorneys-General of all the States;
  • Chairman, Council of Legal Education;
  • 30 Legal Practitioners nominated by NBA;
  • Up to 10 eminent legal practitioners of not less than 15 years post-call standing.

There are Life Benchers and Benchers by virtue of office - S3(4) LPA.
