PART I

National Commission for Museums and Monuments Establishment of the Commission

I. Establishment of National Commission for Museums and Monuments

(1) There is hereby established a body to be known as the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (in this Actreferred to as “the Commission”) which shall have the functions assigned to it by this Act.
(2) The Commission shall be a body corporate with perpetual succession and a com- mon seal and may sue or be sued in itscorporate name.

2. Membership and tenure of office

(1) The Commission shall consist of a chairman to be appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Minister and thefollowing other members, that is –
(a) five persons to be appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Minister being persons who by reasonof their ability, experience or special- ised knowledge in-
(i) education;
(ii) culture;
(iii) natural history;
(iv) science and technology; and
(v) sciences,

are capable of making useful contribution to the work of the Commission;

(b) nine representatives of the States to be appointed in rotation, so however that no State shall have more than onerepresentative at anyone time; and
(c) the Director-General.
(2) The Minister may appoint one of the members of the Commission referred to in paragraph (a) of subsection (1) of thissection to be the deputy chairman of the Commis – sion for such period as the Minister may determine, so however that deputy chairman who ceases to be a member shall also cease to be deputy chairman.
